Violence against women in any form must be condemned. Sadly women across the globe continue to be subjected to violence, sometimes leading to their untimely and needless deaths. These crimes are most of the time committed by the very people they trust and look up to for protection and love. The media is full of atrocities being committed against women and girls even in times of peace. Rape, defilement, widowhood rites, widow inheritance, forced marriage, abduction, Female Genital Mutilation are all commonplace practices that are condoned by society in the name of culture, tradition and religion. The situation is worse in times of war. Nearly 20 years after the UN Women’s Conference in Beijing, China, not much has changed. The statistics show that violence against women and girls is increasing in unprecedented proportions and we cannot sit on the fence and hope that the situation will change. It is time for action. The fight against gender-based violence is everybody’s responsibility and women must lead the way to stop it. It is for this reason that I endorse the formulation of Global Norm on Violence Against Women. The time to Act is Now!!!!!
