“My work has taught me that laws may be important but application is crucial. Despite progressive domestic legislation across many countries to address multiple forms of violence against women, it remains a chronic problem across the globe. I have met women from diverse backgrounds and different countries who have been met with absolute indifference when disclosing acts of violence against them. Tolerance of pervasive violence against women must be challenged at every level. A binding global norm will not be the answer to violence against women, but it will constitute another crucial step in raising awareness and promoting a global political rejection of the widespread impunity and indifference that exist when a woman’s right to a life free from violence is refused.”
