“I have a deep commitment to the eradication of all forms violence against women and girls. I am gravely concerned that in 2016, women and girls in all countries do not enjoy explicit legal protection from violence. The prevalence of violence against women and girls across the world is growing and must be stopped immediately. A key weapon against violence is proper and just laws and for violence against women and girls that is in the form of a much-needed treaty addressing Violence Against Women. This treaty will complement existing international law including the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women and the Istanbul Convention but is absolutely necessary to arm and empower women and girls everywhere to protect themselves from violence. I am in favor of a Global Treaty on VAW.”
