“In a patriarchal and male dominated society like Nepal, where women are systematically discriminated, the status of single women (widows) is dismal and they fall under the most marginalized and abused sector of the population. The situation of conflict and natural disaster has created many young widows and orphan causing internal displacements and migration. Women in Nepal face many physical constraints upon widowhood. Although the Constitution of Nepal, guarantees equality between all citizens, there are still more discriminatory provision in various laws and by laws which are against women and especially widows that conflict with rights provided under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). Thus we need very strong mechanism to monitor the international resolutions and declarations on violence against women. I am in favor of a global treaty on VAW.”
